What’s the secret to a great teaching job?

Teaching strategies gold is the latest way to share your lessons, but the tips are no substitute for a solid teacher.

That’s because it takes a lot of hard work to be a successful teacher.

In fact, you may not even need to be an expert to be effective.

Here are seven lessons to be sure you’ve got what it takes to teach.


Be the teacher.

“Teaching is about giving and receiving feedback and it’s about getting your students to be what you want them to be,” says Julie Koss, an instructional consultant who teaches creative writing at The Center for Creative Writing at the University of Chicago.

“You can’t teach without being good, but if you’re not good at it, you’re going to be unable to do it.”

Koss says you should always be the one providing feedback.

“If you’re a teacher, it’s the teacher’s job to tell your students what they need to know,” she says.

“It’s your job to explain why they should learn something or be interested in it.”

In other words, don’t just give them some examples and expect them to pick up the lesson.

“When a student is really engaged with what you’re teaching, it really means that the teacher is teaching,” Koss explains.

“They’re learning.”


Get them to understand.

“One of the most effective things that teachers can do is to engage their students in a discussion,” says Kimberly Miller, a senior lecturer in the creative writing department at the City University of New York Graduate Center.

“We have to find the ways that our students can be critical thinkers and be able to understand our point of view,” she explains.

Miller recommends a variety of activities, such as: “If they are engaged in an essay, they will ask, ‘What do I mean by that?'”

“If I’m giving a lesson, they might say, ‘How do I know if I’m doing a good job?'”

“Sometimes a student will be asking a question or showing you how to do something.

They’re looking to understand the reasoning behind the action they’re taking.”


Be mindful of their interests.

“Students need to realize that if they don’t understand something, they’re going down a rabbit hole,” says Koss.

“The most important thing teachers can give their students is that they can see how things are different if they’re interested in them.”

Kox says it’s important to keep the conversation open to students’ interests and make sure they’re not being too busy, because they can easily get distracted.

“A teacher needs to know that if a student wants to ask something about another subject, they need a teacher who knows what they’re looking for and can respond,” she stresses.


Be a supportive mentor.

“My favorite thing a teacher can do with a student,” says Miller, “is be a great mentor.”

Miller recommends working with a team of five or six people, who can “talk through issues and get them to take action.”

“You’ll need to have an open-mindedness, not be too hard on them, not take them too seriously,” she adds.

“There are lots of people who do that.”

For example, students can ask questions, make suggestions, or make suggestions on how to improve the course.

And if students don’t find it difficult, they can then ask for additional help.

“That’s a great way to really support a student’s development and teach them about a topic they really care about,” Miller adds.


Keep it simple.

“People tend to get distracted if they can’t keep up with what they want to learn, and you can use that distraction to teach them,” says Tanya Norenzayan, an assistant professor of creative writing and the author of the book Simple: How to Be a Great Teacher, which includes the best teaching strategies for all levels of experience.

“I think it’s really important to teach your students the basics of what they are learning,” she emphasizes.

“And then they can come back to it later and try to understand more of it.”

And if they need more, Miller recommends giving them specific exercises.

“Then they can learn a specific skill or apply it in their own work,” she advises.

“In a way, it could be a little like having a teacher on call,” she laughs.

“This is really important because that can help the student become a better teacher.”

“It helps them to see things in their head,” adds Miller.

“Instead of trying to explain something to them, maybe it helps them think about what they think is important.”

Kohn has found that her students often do this in class when she asks for feedback, as opposed to when she’s giving the advice.

“Sometimes I’ll tell them to think about a problem that they have with their assignment and it will help them think through what’s going on in their mind,” she points out.
